Dominion

So I was reading Genesis  in the bible and It was talking about how God gave men the dominion over all the things in the earth, so I want to do a word study on dominion.
(Things in this font just mean my thoughts)

Webster 1828 dic:

dominion

DOMINION, n. [L. See Dominant.]
1. Sovereign or supreme authority; the power of governing and controlling.
The dominion of the Most High is an everlasting dominion. Daniel 4.
2. Power to direct, control, use and dispose of at pleasure; right of possession and use without being accountable; as the private dominion of individuals.
3. Territory under a government; region; country; district governed, or within the limits of the authority of a prince or state; as the British dominions.
4. Government; right of governing. Jamaica is under the dominion of Great Britain.
5. Predominance; ascendant.
6. An order of angels.
Whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers. Colossians 1.
7. Persons governed.
Judah was his sanctuary; Israel his dominion. Psalm 114.

(To have government over or to posses)

Scriptures:

  • Daniel 11:5

5 ¶And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominionshall be a great dominion.
  • Judges 5:13

13 Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people: the Lord made me have dominion over the mighty.

14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: hisdominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
  • Daniel 4:34

34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:
  • Doctrine and Covenants 121:46

46 The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion, and thy scepter an unchanging scepter of righteousness and truth; and thy dominionshall be an everlasting dominion, and without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee forever and ever.
  • Daniel 7:27

27 And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.
  • Daniel 6:26

26 I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and steadfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.
  • Genesis 37:8

8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
  • Daniel 7:6

6 After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.
  • Daniel 7:12

12 As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominiontaken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.

(It seems that a lot of these scriptures say that the dominion was given.)
Quotes:

Pervading nationalism imposes its dominion on man today in many different forms and with an aggressiveness that spares no one. The challenge that is already with us is the temptation to accept as true freedom what in reality is only a new form of slavery.
~Pope John Paul II

Even Kings and emperors with heaps of wealth and vast dominion cannot compare with an ant filled with the love of God.
~Guru Nanak

I had rather excel others in the knowledge of what is excellent, than in the extent of my power and dominion.
~Alexander the great

You can have no dominion greater or less than that over yourself.
~Leonardo da Vinci

So it sounds like Dominion over something means you earned to have possession over it, or someone gave it to you. God gave us dominion over the earth, but he has the Eternal Dominion over everything. So I guess it is kind of like our stewardship, because we are supposed to betaking care of it as our responsibility, but really it is ALL HIS - His eternal Dominion, and we are given it as our own dominion to see what and how we deal with it, to determine weather we can have eternal life. I guess the word Dominion means more than just a card game!:)

    Quotes:
O Lord, deliver me from the man of excellent intention and impure heart: for the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. ~T.S. Eliot
We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy
follows like a shadow that never leaves. ~Buddah
( O My Gosh! I loved this quote! It is so wise!)
(Reading the scriptures is a very pure intent.)
My strength has the strength of ten because my heart is pure.~Alfred Lord Tennyson
Means we use must be as pure as the ends we seek.~Martin Luther King Jr.
    My  Personal Definition:
Pure in heart to me means to have good thoughts and good intents in our actions. And to be trying to improve every day, that is a like The Pure intent. That is what repentance is, and when we repent we become Pure. We become white in Him. Because Jesus Christ died and atoned and rose again for us, we can repent and be doing our Best everyday, and try to improve everyday, and we can be Pure! Its a wonderful plan. Its the Plan Of Happiness! If we are Pure, We are happy. And Its the true Kind of happiness. Not the fake kind. We get that joy when we think of improving everyday and keep taking advantage of the Atonement in our continuing journey of this life. :)
